By Chief Jason Blauvelt
January 5, 2016

On the morning of Tuesday January 5, 2016 the Croton Falls Fire Department was dispatched by the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services to a Lake Street residence for a report of a deer that had fallen thru the ice and was stuck in the water. Lake street surrounds Peach Lake.

Firefighters were faced with a few difficult challenges when they arrived on scene. Not only was it 5 degrees outside but the deer had fallen thru the thin ice and was stuck in the muck of the lake about 25 feet off the shore. Firefighters suited up in Ice Rescue Suites to brave the cold air and water temperatures and used the homeowners canoe to break thru the ice to access the deer.

Ropes were then placed around the stomach of the deer and firefighters pulled the deer to the dock where they lifted deer out of the water. Once the deer was placed on land and firefighters removed the rope the deer took off running into the neighboring yards.
