By Chief Jason Blauvelt
September 9, 2016

On the afternoon of Friday, September 9, 2016 at 14:53 the Croton Falls Fire Department was dispatched to Interstate 684 southbound for a reported multi-car accident with multiple patients. While units were responding the 60 Control dispatchers notified Car 2071 that they had numerous reports of passengers possibly still trapped in one vehicle and others possibly ejected out of the other vehicle.

Car 2071 immediately requested the Stat Flight be put on stand by. Car 2071 was the first to arrive on scene and established command, he then confirmed there was a multi-car accident and that there was 1 patient laying on the ground. At completion of the scene size up Car 2071 reported there were 4 total patients and one patient was unresponsive.

Command then requested 3 ambulances, 3 medics and 2 medical helicopters to the scene. Firefighter crews from Rescue 28 and MA-17 performed the extrication of the unresponsive patient from 1 car while firefighters from MA-16 and Engine 149 began patient care of the other patients. Engine 148 was assigned to be the ground contact for the helicopters which were to land on I-684 just south of the accident scene.

The unresponsive patient was quickly extricated and transferred to a waiting ambulance. Due to the long ETAs of both helicopters the paramedics decided to transport by ground to Danbury Hospital. One other patient was transported to Danbury Hospital as well and the other 2 patients were transported to Putnam Hospital Center.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 684 were closed for roughly 20 minutes while emergency responders operated. The left lane was then reopened to allow traffic to proceed while State Police Accident Reconstruction Officers investigated the accident scene.

Units: Car 2071, Rescue 28, MA-16, MA-17, Engine 148, Engine 149, NSVAC 72B1 & 72B2, WEMS 45M2,45M3, 4514, 4515 & 40A1, NYSP, NSPD
