By Captain Jeffery Daday Jr.
February 5, 2018

On February 4, 2018, at 10:49 p.m. the Croton Falls Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 252 June Road...Kingley's Deli & Pizzeria.

2nd Assistant Chief Partieno arrived on scene and quickly confirmed a working fire, which upgraded the alarm assignment and added mutual aid departments. First arriving firefighters gained access to an upstairs apartment to ensure it was not occupied and also confirmed there were no deli workers on the main floor of the building. Chief of Department Dreyer arrived on scene, established command and had a 360 degree size-up completed as additional apparatus arrived.

Engine 148’s crew stretched hose lines and quickly went to work attacking the fire on the first and second floors. Ladder 67 extended its aerial ladder to the roof so crews could create a vent hole to release pent up smoke, heat and gases. Additional crews knocked down fire in the basement, completed a search of the structure, placed additional ladders and set up a good water supply operation on site using the tankers that had responded. South Salem's Engine 167 established a fill site for the tankers next to the Bloomerside Pavillion and drafted from Peach Lake to ensure an adequate water supply for firefighting operations. Initially a crew from Bedford Hills then a crew from Yorktown stood by as the FAS Team so additional firefighters were available should there be an emergency such as a downed firefighter or building collapse. Thankfully, there were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

The main body of fire, which had extended to all levels of the building (basement, first floor, second floor and attic) was knocked down within 45 minutes, but the construction of the building and significant storage of supplies required extensive overhaul and extinguishment of hot spots for another hour plus. Investigators determined the fire started outside the building and was accidental in nature.

An engine and chief officer from the Carmel Fire Department stood-by in the Croton Falls firehouse to cover any additional calls in the district.

All units were clear of the scene by 2:35 a.m.

Great work by all involved and a thank you to all our mutual aid departments for your continued help. Job well done.
