In the past week, our firefighters attended several drills that served as both a refresher as well as a review of some new updated information. On Thursday evening February 20th the South Salem Fire Department hosted a Communications 101 drill coordinated by Ex-Chief Jason Blauvelt who is the current Battalion 13 coordinator. The drill, attended by over 60 members from multiple emergency services agencies, was run by Captain Munson and Dispatcher Astarita of the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services Communications Division, also known as 60 Control. The drill covered a wide range of information from a basic refresher of every day tactics to the new upcoming radio system overhaul. It was a very informative evening. On Monday February 24th the Department scheduled a walk through of the North Salem Middle/High School. A school rep walked us through the building as we discussed points of interest from an emergency response perspective. We believe the familiarization was a valuable use of time for all firefighters specifically those who don't spend much time in the building. In the event of an emergency at the school, the walk through will help us with a more efficient response and a better understanding of the building's layout. |
