Just before 5:30 this morning (Saturday, July 23), Fire and EMS units were dispatched to a residence on Bridleside Lane for an allergic reaction. While responding, crews were updated by dispatchers at 60 Control that instructions on how to perform CPR were being given over the phone to the caller. Upon arrival, firefighters found a young man in cardiac arrest. Drawing on their experience, firefighters simultaneously started CPR, prepared to use additional life-saving equipment and updated our dispatchers and responding EMS units. Prior to transport to the hospital by the North Salem Volunteer Ambulance Corps and a medic from Westchester EMS, the patient regained a pulse and started breathing.

Thankfully for this patient, the responding firefighters included four ex-chiefs and two firefighters who had emergency medical training and experience with this type of call. Additionally, one of our probationary firefighters responded and gained invaluable experience as he performed CPR, worked seamlessly as a member of our crew and helped save a life. This is the second person saved by firefighters using CPR and their training in the past few months.
