Croton Falls Responds to a Structure Fire on a Frigid Day
By Asst. Chief Dan Dreyer
February 13, 2016
At 09:23 on a frigid Saturday, February 13 the Croton Falls Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 11 Chamberlin Lane off Route 22 on the border of the Croton Falls and Brewster-Southeast fire districts. 1st Assistant Chief Dan Dreyer (Car 2072) was on scene quickly and confirmed a working structure fire with heavy fire climbing an exterior wall and extending into the building. After confirming all residents were out of the home, mutual aid units were requested via 60 Control.
Due to the home’s close proximity to the border of the two fire districts, the initial call reporting the fire was routed to Putnam County’s Bureau of Emergency Services and the Brewster Fire Department was dispatched before the Croton Falls Fire Department. Brewster’s fire chief and first-due engine arrived shortly after Car 2072 and immediately placed a 1 3/4” inch line into operation to begin attacking the fire. Due to the quick response of Putnam and Westchester mutual aid units, the fire was under control within 30 minutes and the majority of the home was saved. Fire damage was limited to a master bathroom and adjoining master bedroom and hallway, though smoke damage affected more of the residence.
The cause of the fire was investigated by the Westchester County Zone 5 Cause and Origin Team and determined to be accidental in nature.
